Thoughts of the Day

Dental insurance is playing a larger role in helping people obtain dental treatment. Because we strongly feel our patients deserve the best possible dental care that we can provide, and in an effort to maintain the highest quality of care, we would like to share with our patients some information about dental insurance today.

We encourage our patients to ask questions about their dental coverage with their employers as well as with the plan provider.

#1: Dental insurance is not meant to be a pay-all; it’s only meant to be an aid.

#2: Many plans tell their insured that they’ll be covered “up to 80% or up to 100%”. In spite of what you’ve been told, we’ve found that most plans cover about 40% to 60% of an average fee. Some plans pay more – some less. The amount your plan pays is determined by how much your employer or yourself paid for the plan. The least expensive plan equals the less you’ll receive in insurance benefits.

#3 Many plans have a ANNUAL (yearly) PLAN MAXIMUM limit of $1000 - $1500 for dental services. Once those funds have been used for the year, your dental insurance will not pay for any additional services.  Again, we encourage our patients to read through their plan to gain more insight as to how their dental plan works.

#3: Some routine dental services are NOT covered by insurance carriers. Please be sure to read through your coverages. If you have questions, call your plan provider.

#4: Dentists charge the same fees to all their patients, regardless of the insurance coverage. At times, the fee paid by the insurance company may be lower than the fee charged by the dentist, depending upon the benefits allowed by the policy.

#5: Insurance companies will often “down-code” a procedure to allow them to pay less to your dentist. When insurance companies do this, it effects the dental practice in a negative way.

As always, we look forward to offering our patients the best service possible. Looking forward to see your smiling faces in our office soon.

I am very excited to be participating in the 2017 Spear Summit. This is the 9th annual summit, and I have been most if not all of them. This summit allows for me to continue educating myself to provide the very best in treatment and care possible for my patients.  I am thrilled to spend the next three days working with over 1300 clinicians world wide.

The Spear Group is a culmination of the best dental clinicians from around the world.  It is the leading edge of dentistry in education, information, technology and techniques.

Stay tuned as my plan is to begin updating my blog more often. I will share with more about my experiences at the summit as well as sharing new innovative ways to get the very best care for you and your family.
